One of the
Thailand Department of Fisheries (DOF)'s responsibilities is to
develop Thailand's fishery and marine shrimp farming since it is
a significant component of Thailand's economy. DOF have developed
specific projects to enhance the shrimp culture sector by improving
various aspects such as environmental quality, shrimp product safety,
and marketing in order to support expansion of shrimp farming and
improve the shrimp culture quality. DOF have developed a number
of policies to support the development and protection of shrimp
farming in Thailand which are as follows:
Shrimp Antibiotic
Residues Monitoring Project
This project
was developed to inform the various stakeholders such as shrimp
farmers, feed producers, processors and manufacturers and exporters
about control and prevention of antibiotic residues in shrimp products.
This will increase efficiency of shrimp product quality control
and inspection practices of DOF by covering the antibiotic residues
in shrimp flesh and establish importer's confidence on Thailand's
quality control system.
Project
of Seawater Irrigation System for Marine Shrimp Farming at Kung
Krabean Bay
Seawater irrigation system for marine shrimp farming at Kung Krabean
was developed to design and manage a quality seawater system for
the shrimp farm and to collect and treat the effluent from the shrimp
farm before discharging into Kung Krabean Bay. The scope of work
included detailed design and construction of the irrigation systems
e.g. seawater supply, irrigation canal, and effluent treatment system.
Black Tiger
Broodstock Selection Project
This project is designed to produce a quality shrimp fry and to
certify the shrimp breed. The broodstock selection is to produce
specific characteristics of black tiger shrimp species. The breed
must be perfect in egg quantity and quality, produce a quality shrimp
fry, which has a rapid growth, vigor, and disease resistance. Furthermore
this can analyze for genetic variation/genetic marker in order to
develop virus inspection techniques serving for shrimp farmers.
The broodstock selection project comprises the following activities:
selection of black tiger shrimp broodstock, quality shrimp fry production,
certification of black tiger shrimp species, training and knowledge
dissemination.
In addition,
there are other projects in preparation or under consideration to
further enhance the shrimp farming industry e.g. credit supply for
shrimp farmer and quality shrimp operator under Code of Conduct
or Good Aquaculture Practice guideline and aquatic animal clinic
guideline. These projects are beneficial to marine shrimp operators
and farmers in development of a systematic shrimp farming operation.
